STRAY Review

Developed by BlueTwelve Studio and published by Annapurna Interactive, STRAY is an enchanting video game that allows players to step into the paws of a lost cat navigating a futuristic city.

Set in a beautifully crafted albeit rather dystopian world, the story follows a stray cat who finds himself trapped in a strange city, inhabited by robots and mutant bacteria. Our furry protagonist’s mission? Return to the surface alongside his drone companion B-12.

Players can explore the city’s various districts by climbing up obstacles, jumping across ledges, and being just the right amount of curious to open up new paths. Players will spend the rest of their time solving puzzles, fleeing from the fearsome Zurks, and forming unexpected connections with the city’s robotic inhabitants.

And of course, there are plenty of opportunities to scratch, nap, or simply knock objects onto the floor. STRAY’s attention to cat behaviours and mannerisms will resonate with all cat lovers, but there’s plenty more on offer than just the adorableness of playing as a cat. The game combines the cute antics of our feline friends with a unique blend of laid-back gameplay and a beautifully written human-interest story.

The bond between the lost cat and the robotic inhabitants of the city creates an emotional connection that had me emotionally invested in the narrative and whole-heartedly routing for the ginger tabby and his side-kick. Uncovering the heartwarming connections between characters adds a layer of depth to STRAY that is rare to find in games.

Another rare quality which STRAY exemplifies is its’ respect for players’ time. The main storyline can be completed in under two hours, meaning those with limited time or open world fatigue can fully enjoy the game without feeling overwhelmed.

The game’s pacing is just right, striking a balance between exploration and progressing through the narrative. This approach makes STRAY an excellent choice for those who want to savour their gaming experience without the pressure of spending countless hours on endless tasks or grinding through levels. It’s a refreshing reminder that gaming can be a source of enjoyment and relaxation, rather than a chore to be ticked off a list.

STRAY strikes the perfect balance between interactive storytelling and carefree gameplay, making it a must-play for anyone seeking a heartwarming and truly enjoyable gaming experience.
